At Smithville Family Dentistry, we offer dental crown installation as one of our tooth restoration services. If your Smithville dentist tells you that you need a crown, you may have many questions. Here, we answer three frequently asked questions:
What is a crown?
A dental crown is a cap that is installed over a tooth in order to strengthen it and improve its appearance. A crown looks like a tooth and, depending on the material you choose, can seamlessly fit in with the rest of your teeth.
Why do I need a crown?
You may need a dental crown for several reasons. First, you may have a weak tooth that is at risk of breaking or cracking, or a tooth that is already broken or worn. You may also need a crown if you have had some other dental work, such as a dental bridge or dental implant, that requires extra support.
What does the process look like?
Generally, installing a crown requires two to three visits. First, we may want to take x-rays to determine the depth of the decay to ensure that a root canal is not also necessary. If it is not, we can proceed forward. After preparing the tooth for the procedure, the dentist will numb the tooth and gum tissue, then reshape the tooth to accommodate the crown. The dentist will then make an impression of the tooth to send to the manufacturer, who will create a crown custom for you. The dentist will leave you with a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready. At your next appointment, your Smithville dentist will install the permanent crown for you.
