At Smithville Family Dentistry, we commonly provide dental bridges for our patients. Read on for more information on what this means, and how dental bridges could benefit you.

What are dental bridges?

Dental bridges are used to fix a gap due to missing teeth. They are composed of at least two crowns on the abutment teeth, meaning the teeth are on each side of the gap, and a pontic, or false tooth, in the middle. Pontics are made of alloys, gold, porcelain, or a combination of them.

What can I gain from getting a dental bridge?

If you are missing teeth, dental bridges have many benefits. They can:

  • Allow you to chew and speak more comfortably
  • Keep remaining teeth from moving
  • Restore your facial shape
  • Restore your smile
  • Improve your bite

What are the different kinds of dental bridges?

  • Traditional: Traditional bridges use the process described above: a crown is placed on either side of the gap with a pontic between them. This common type of bridge is usually made of porcelain with metal or ceramic.
  • Cantilever: These are used when there is only one tooth adjacent to the gap. This is not a common type of bridge anymore, and is not recommended for use in the back of the mouth as it can damage the other teeth.
  • Maryland bonded: Maryland bonded bridges are made of either porcelain, metal-fused porcelain, or plastic, and are supported by a framework that is bonded to your remaining teeth.
